HOUSTON (FOX 26) - A local military veteran who was almost killed in Afghanistan is now working to help a village near the scene of that bloody ambush.
Back in 2005, Marcus Luttrell was a US Navy SEAL. Out of 20 American troops - including three fellow SEALs - he was the only one left alive after a dangerous mission went sour in the mountains of east Afghanistan. Luttrell chronicled the carnage in his 2007 best-seller, "Lone Survivor."
Badly injured, he escaped by crawling to a nearby village, where friendly Afghans dressed his wounds and kept the Taliban at bay.
Ever since, Marcus Luttrell has been trying to raise the standard of living there in the Village of Sabray.
"We had a chance to build a school or a church or a road in there, or generators," he told FOX 26 News. "You know, it's so tough because we built the school a while back. And the Taliban burned it down."
Next month, Luttrell will try again. He's hosting Boot Run Houston, a fun run to raise money for the Village of Sabray and for the Boot Campaign, which funds organizations that assist US military veterans.

Boot Run Houston consists of a half marathon and a 5K run, beginning at 1pm on Sunday, November 25, 2012, at the Houston Oaks Country Club.
Despite recent back surgery, Marcus Luttrell has committed to tackling the half marathon. He figures he ought to have no trouble getting motivated.
"I've been thinking in my head, I was like, 'I'll just pretend I'm back in Afghanistan and I'm just running for my life,' you know?"
