These preparations will also have many benefits to the communities that prepare for these Catastrophes.

A Major Super Solar Storm can have similar effects upon our electrical grids and devices we use today, normally an EMP is caused by a Nuclear Device, when exploded in the Atmosphere it will cause Catastrophic Failure to the Electrical grids and most if not all new electronic devices. The pulse will Fry the circuits in the boards and has the possibilities of bringing the Modern era of America to a standstill or in other words returning us to the 1800’s in a matter of 1 second.

The EMP Commission was established pursuant to title XIV of the Floyd D. Spence National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2001 (as enacted into law by Public Law 106-398; 114 Stat. 1654A-345). Duties of the EMP Commission include assessing:

 The nature and magnitude of potential high-altitude EMP threats to the United States from all potentially hostile states or non-state actors that have or could acquire nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles enabling them to perform a high-altitude EMP attack against the United States within the next 15 years;

    The vulnerability of United States military and especially civilian systems to an EMP attack, giving special attention to vulnerability of the civilian infrastructure as a matter of emergency preparedness;

    The capability of the United States to repair and recover from damage inflicted on United States military and civilian systems by an EMP attack; and

    The feasibility and cost of hardening select military and civilian systems against EMP attack.

The Commission is charged with identifying any steps it believes should be taken by the United States to better protect its military and civilian systems from EMP attack.

Multiple reports and briefings associated with this effort have been produced by the EMP Commission including an Executive Report (PDF, 578KB) and a Critical National Infrastructures Report (PDF, 7MB) describing findings and recommendations.

The EMP Commission was reestablished via the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2006 to continue its efforts to monitor, investigate, make recommendations, and report to Congress on the evolving threat to the United States from electromagnetic pulse attack resulting from the detonation of a nuclear weapon or weapons at high altitude.

The Commission has released a Critical National Infrastructures Report (PDF, 7MB) and testified before the House Armed Services Committee (July 10, 2008) - Written Testimony (PDF, 76KB).

Prevention / Repair / Surviving Emergencies - Catastrophes

  Now I would like to focus on what we can do as communities and individuals to prepare for major catastrophes, the cause EMP and effects are very well documented above.

Preparing to Avoid an EMP Catastrophe will have many benefits to the Individuals, Towns, Cities, Counties, States, and Nations that take this threat seriously and take the time and measures to Prepare.

Whether the Emergency is a EMP, Solar Storm, Natural Events such as Earth Quakes, Tornadoes, Flooding, Land Slides, Extreme Weather Conditions, Tsunami, Fire, Hurricanes, or Economical events such as extreme unemployment for whatever reason, National emergencies such as War, Banking & Financial Collapse, Collapse of National Dollar, or other political or economic catastrophe that will have negative effects upon our communities as we currently see around the world taking place. The list could be added to I am sure.

The idea here is to prepare to save as many lives and communities as possible in the time of an Emergency. So the items spoken of as results of EMP can be prepared for will help in many other ways as well.

Overview of Emergency issues.

Protecting Critical Components of the Infrastructure. 

Maintaining the Capability to Monitor and Evaluate the Conditions of your Critical Infrastructures.

Electric Power Infrastructures – your local towns do you have adequate backups and replacement needs to repair them so you can continue to have power. No power = no water, no sanitation, etc.

Telecommunications- EMP will delete most if not all communications in the affected areas. Is there backup preparations for communications methods that will survive EMP and other events.

Banking and Finance – There may be No access to people’s savings and accounts and investments. All commerce based on the paper dollar could end for a time, could result in Bartering or other methods until it can be repaired.

Water and Food -  When the people run out of Food and Water you will find that the human instinct to survive will create mobs, riots, roving militant groups or armies who will take from others to survive. This Chaos must be prevented before it happens by taking away the Fear of Starvation, loss of Hope. This is done by individual and community preparedness to the best of our abilities. Many are not in the financial position to save any money or food and water item’s, we must find a way to prepare to help those who will need it. Some who do prepare may not have access to their preparations. They may lose their food storage in a disaster and will need our help.

Emergency Services – An EMP will delete communication between those who need help and those who can give it. Transportation maybe effected, 911 Won’t Work, Preparations must be made and the people made aware that if they go to their Town / City  designated place there will be emergency communication and medical help available at these local places they may have to walk to. Plan for it.

Space Systems – GPS will be gone if an EMP or Major Solar Storm hits them. So make sure everyone knows their local area’s and can use a compass and map.

Transportation – Since most modern vehicles of all types have computers and microchips an EMP would drastically DELETE the ability of movement by eliminating most transportation.

We must be prepared with older vehicles that would not be affected by EMP, Emergency, Law enforcement, Farm, Freight – Semi Trucks etc., and personal vehicles the more the better.

Our communities are having Emergency Preparedness meetings and exercises and planning more often this is good. Some of the items mentioned above by the nature of being prepared are covered to a degree. However most still depend on the ability of having power sources and other normal modern tools being useable.

We must also prepare for the event of Not being able to use our modern devices and tools to help survive as a community and individuals if the worst case scenario  of an EMP should happen.

Power Supply

Basic infrastructures if protected to the best of our ability could survive an EMP, if not we should plan for non-modern equipment to use to creating Power Supply.

Coal fired Engines, Water / Hydro systems, Steam Engines, Diesel Generators that do not have computer electronics to run. And further older style of Power generation systems.

If we can keep the power ON then that will prevent may people from death due to loss of power.

All medical facilities will need backups that will be EMP proof, including Public and Private such as hospitals, clinics, rest homes, etc.

Sheriff and Police will need power as well for communications.

Realize Cell phones, Internet will be lost permanently. So any radios that may work – most likely the older tube style ham radios, or pre microchip style hand held walkies talkies and other styles.

Stores with freezers will need power, if not then the frozen foods must be used first so as not to waste them.

And many more problems with loss of power most Emergency Preparedness Groups are familiar with.

Emergency Services

911 Won’t work

Ambulances, Rescue Vehicles, Fire, Police, etc.  Won’t work unless they are of an older non computerized style of vehicle.  And even some of these may need to be restored, repaired in order to work, cylindroids, batteries and such electronic parts that maybe fried by an EMP pulse.

Medical tools may not Work, our modern rescue devices are computerized and may be destroyed by EMP Pulse, so be prepared to work manually for everything needed.

Medical supplies that need power to keep at certain temperatures will need to have a form of back up storage, if the power goes out.

In case of EMP many on life support systems may perish almost immediately, breathing devices, heart, etc. Some pace makers will be shut down by EMP as well.

Many Dangers to the medical community after an EMP.

Transportation

As just mentioned above there will be issues with most of our transportation vehicles.

 Since most modern vehicles of all types have computers and microchips an EMP would drastically DELETE the ability of movement by eliminating most transportation.

We must be prepared with older vehicles that would not be affected by EMP, Emergency, Law enforcement, Farm, Freight – Semi Trucks etc., and personal vehicles the more the better.

Vehicles from the mid 1970’s and back to the early 1900’s will be about the only vehicles that will work, and be able to be repaired if affected by a few parts getting fried by an EMP Pulse. So will be good to have the vehicles and the spare parts around. Every town should have some.

Older bus’s or trucks will be needed to retrieve people stranded on the Interstate and other roads in our area and bring them to safety.

Also having older semi-trucks that will work will allow us to remove all trailers from their stranded places to a collection point in the towns closest to  them, in case the contents will be needed to assist in the survival of the communities, or stored safe until civilization is restored on a national bases again.

Banking and Finance

 There may be No access to people’s savings and accounts and investments. All commerce based on the paper dollar could end for a time, could result in Bartering or other methods until it can be repaired.

Expect a trade or voucher system to be developed if the National currency is deleted during such a huge event.

   Water and Food

Martial Law will be needed to prevent mobs from overrunning Stores in the county and towns, in a panic for food and other items.

If the leadership in the communities need to do this it will provide a means by which to distribute the remaining food stuffs in an orderly fashion for the survival of all not just a few.

Also be aware some will desire to poach peoples livestock to food, this must be prevented as best we can.

Good preparations and communications to the communities about where and how much food and water items are stored due to preparations this will help ease the threat of mobs and looters.

Food Preparedness

  I have seen today were some communities are using Green houses to grow and feed their neighborhoods in the Milwaukee area, they produce a few millions of tons of garden and other food each year.

The idea is that if the towns and cities and the county help make sure all become so self-sufficient in their area’s around the county it would prevent looting and mob violence.

If Green Houses were established (the number to be determined by population of the individual area) so that food was Grown year round then a County and its towns would be able to become self-reliant, and avoid the starvation times that will happen after an EMP, and other Natural disasters. 

Vacant or unused Farms could be used to grow needed food stuffs and then either canned or freeze-dried then packaged and stored in community warehouses for future emergency needs.

Water storage is important, however if power can quickly be restored throughout the county then it will not be a problem for drinking and sanitary needs.

Growing for self-reliance as a community.

This would reap great benefits to the community that learns this process.

Those who are on Food Stamps, UN-employment, or other needs who are not able to provide for themselves can use the food items produced and stored in the community warehouses.

They can also assist in the growing and maintaining of the production and storage of this food as volunteers as they are on public assistance or their Church’s assistance already, this would give them the opportunity to Give Back for the blessings they have and will receive in food items for them and their families.

So we have a labor force that will volunteer and will be blessed for it, those unemployed who are able can work as well, giving them a feeling of working in trade for their assistance given them, many won’t ask for help out of pride, yet most will trade labor for food, will be psychologically a positive and good benefit to  many.

This will Take care of the food needs in our county, cities, towns. We won’t need to rely on the Federal Government for Handouts we can do it ourselves as we become self-sufficient.

This will also bring the communities into more of a closer relationship, no class warfare or other prejudices as they will be working together as a group to provide for one another, this will build a great bond amongst us.

The need for a New Food Cannery building in our area is there, and future plans to build one, what if the County or City leaders went into a partnership with the LDS Church to build a larger facility and then help operate it  in a joint venture to assist everyone in the area. I see this as a win win deal, if it would be feasible.

After Power the Top issues to deal with will be food and water, shelter, sanitary needs, then survival.

As a community we American’s can pull together to do this if our egos, pride, differences can be put aside.
We CAN survive if we unite to prepare for Catastrophic Events.

If this takes place and the cell towers are down for months, I do NOT want to be in line at the cell store waiting on back order for a new phone. My chain saw motor spark plug is driven by an electronic ignition system. I do NOT want to go into a major extended power outage without a chain saw. I need to protect it. I also need transportation of some kind and something that will work with me to accomplish routine tasks like a 4 wheeler, boat motor, truck, car, etc. All use electronic ignition systems! (See list of items below of what may be affected by EMP). A Faraday Box is designed to protect again just such an occurrence as an EMP. The military uses this along with other “hardening” practices to protect against the potential EMP Flood we’ve been discussing. For us at home, this in many cases just isn’t feasible on our budgets or technical expertise.
